I'm not sure why, but I have an association as this word being more of a British slang term. I very rarely use it compared to other terms, though I also don't tend to discuss the topic often. It's interesting that over time it went from onomatopoeia to being a general slang term for masturbation, although I believe it is much more commonly applied to males. Maybe you're already familiar with another interesting term, "jilling". In reference to the below, there must be entire books on how genitalia gained some of the nicknames and slang that they have. I'm not familiar with the origin of "beaver" in particular. And as with other terms, "toss the salad" can certainly be used innocently enough in the correct context - I used it today with family. However, you definitely don't want to replace the definite article with a pronoun.

This is the first time I have learned that "fap" could possibly be British English! I heard that there are many words that are only used in the U.S. and in the U.K., and my country borrowed words from both of them.
Also, "jilling" is a great word! The dictionary said it was an analogy for "jack off". I have never seen an example of a person's name turning into a verb. I would love to use this word in my art!
Also, how the genitalia got "that" name is an interesting topic. Several references stated that this question is deeply related to the origins of the English language. The difficulty of this problem is shown by the fact that the same animal slang is used in English, French, German, and Dutch. Perhaps "beaver bashing" has a similar etymology?
Finally, I am relieved to hear that "toss the salad" is OK to use in everyday conversation. However, I will follow your advice.

Very interesting piece. As i native English speaker I guess i don't appreciate how hard English is, seeing as it's what i have known all my life. My Japanese is very limited, but hopefully I can try to answer some of your questions.
The female equivalent of Fap is "Shlick" pronounced "Shh-lick" and the equivalent of fapping is "Shlicking". From what i understand this is also an onomatopoeia, meant to sound like a vagina/clitoris being stimulated. Like Fap, this is a slang word that you will never see in any proper dictionary.
In my opinion Shiko Shiko sounds and reads more like Shlick than it does fap, but maybe that's just my opinion. Other slang includes "flicking the bean" "Beaver bashing" and many others but this is another conversation entirely. I shudder at what the hell Japanese translations of those could be lol.
As for why the Japanese for a girl rubbing a man's penis is "To Pull out" as i said my Japanese is very limited so i cannot give a technical answer but i may have a theory. In English we can use terms such as tug, yank and toss, a tug-job, tossed-off erc. These are all worlds that can be associated with pulling or throwing. So perhaps this is common interpretation around the world?
I should point out that "Toss" in particular is widely used in British English, I myself am British. In American English, Toss in a sexual context often refers to Anal play. "Tossing the Salad" is a vulgar slang term for licking your partner's anus. So again, no pulling out or throwing involved ?
I like that you referenced Caitlin Moran, an author i have long admired. I have not read that book, but she often writes about Female issues, society, Feminism etc. Your interpretation sounds correct, i think i may have to buy it too :) I think she raises an interesting point that calling a dildo/masturbuation "Mum" is psychologically cruel to girls. Nothing associated with male masturbuation is referred to as "Dad". Unfortunately there has always been more taboo, if you will, associated with female masturbation than men. There is an expectation that teenage boys will do this often, but not so much with girls or women. In fact there is a modern belief in some scientific circles that women have a greater desire for sex than men, but our cultural beliefs will often say the opposite.
I don't believe Motherfucker can ever be used when talking about self pleasure though, just don't. Sex with your mother is the ultimate taboo, which perhaps explains why there is a lot of porn about it.

Also, thank you for pointing this out. I will remove or correct the word. The F-word is one of the most interesting and least used vocabularies for me as an English learner, and I have misused it (again). Please accept my apologies. Translating phrases containing the F-word into my native language is very difficult and an important education for me. For example, I recently learned the expressions "xxxx me" and "give a xxxx", none of which I could predict or understand without an explanation by a native English speaker.
I also learned the word "shlick" for the first time. I was very impressed by the word and would like to use it in my own art in the future! The onomatopoeia "nuko nuko" might have been translated in English as "shlick shlick". Also, "flicking the beans" is a phrase that actually appeared in the ECCHIcation episode 1, so it left a strong impression on me. I thought "flick" was a word used only for smartphone operation, but when I looked it up in the dictionary, it also said it was an old word meaning "cinema". Deep and interesting. However, "beaver bashing" is new to me. I wonder why the act of bullying a cute beaver indicates female masturbation.
Also, the phrase "tossing the salad" is very interesting. If I did not know this phrase, I would use it accidentally in daily life. Learning these words one by one and avoiding them is the only way for me to avoid trouble.
